Damnoen Saduak Floating Market was established in the reign of King Rama IV to connect the waterway between Bangkok and southern Thailand. The Damnoen Saduak Canal, over 32 km long, became a historic trade route where villagers have exchanged goods since ancient times.
Every early morning, brightly painted paddle boats line up selling pomelo, bananas, young coconut and home-cooked food, letting visitors experience the authentic riverside life of old Siam that still survives today.

The story of Damnoen Saduak begins with the historic canal that linked the western towns of Siam together
The Damnoen Saduak Canal (Rama IV)
During the reign of King Mongkut (Rama IV), a canal was commissioned to shortcut between the Mae Klong and Tha Chin rivers, cutting the waterway from 14 leagues down to just 32 km. Villagers soon adopted the canal as their main trading route.
The golden age of the floating market
After the canal opened, the riverside community flourished. Paddle boats plied their trade energetically, and Damnoen Saduak became the commercial and transport hub of Ratchaburi and the surrounding provinces.
From a way of life to local heritage
Even as land transport took over, the market preserved its riverside way of life. Today it stands as one of Thailand's most important tourism symbols and is registered as a local intangible heritage.
